| Description: | The inaugural REFF-Canada will bring together leading venture capitalists, private equity investors and power and energy project financiers together under one roof.
Session 1: OPENING KEYNOTE ADDRESS This session will feature an opening keynote from a leading renewable energy figure, giving a general market overview and looking at future prospects. Session 2: GOVERNMENT POLICY & INITIATIVES This session will feature key representatives from both provincial governments & the Federal government, outlining key energy policies and their applications across Canada and within the different provinces. The Federal Outlook · How is the Federal Government getting involved in renewable energy deployment across Canada? · What are the plans moving forward, with Eco Energy funds rapidly depleting? · How can we develop a coherent pan-Canada energy market? The Provincial Perspective A panel discussion featuring government representatives from key provinces, outlining and debating their renewable energy targets. It is hoped that this session will feature representatives from Ontario, Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta. Lessons learned from the first round of applications for the FiT program · What is the outlook for successful applications? · How patient is the capital investment in this arena? · Update on transmission upgrade projects Session 3: FINANCIAL MARKETS AT HOME & ABROAD An update on the state of financial markets both in Canada and abroad, including the US and European investor appetites. · How are the Canadian financial markets faring in a global context? · What appetite is there for financing from the large banking players? · The impact of overseas investment on the Canadian project finance arena · What involvement is there from both large domestic and international banks in renewable energy projects in Canada? · How does the lending landscape for bank project finance in Canada differ to that in the US and Europe? Session 4: EQUITY & DEBT MARKETS This session will feature a panel of equity providers looking at the availability of equity finance in Canada and the criteria for success in equity financing. Whilst equity forms the majority of financing within this space, there will also be a look at the availability and application of debt financing, and a contrast between the two options. Panel Discussion: Equity Financing · What are the key criteria for successful equity financing? · At what stage will equity financing become available? · What opportunities are available for equity players to become involved throughout the lifecycle of the project in conjunction with the TSX Venture capital pool program? · What is the lenders’ appetite for renewable energy projects, and are specific sectors preferred? And what about debt? · Why is the appetite for debt lending less alive? · How is the debt financing landscape changing in the light of the financial crisis? · What is the debt providers’ appetite for renewable energy projects? Session 5: CORPORATE PROJECT FINANCE In this session, a panel of major utility companies will give their view on the corporate finance arena, in an environment of high-credit ratings and on-balance-sheet financing, and their vision for future investment. Session 6: WIND ENERGY An overview of wind projects in various stages of development across Canada. · How are wind projects being financed? · What regulatory hurdles have to be overcome in order to successfully develop a wind program? · How can you overcome wind capacity restrictions? · Where is the investment coming from? Session 7: HYDRO ENERGY An overview of hydro projects across Canada and what we can expect moving forward. · How can you make best use of Canada’s largest natural resource? · Update on successful and in-development run-of-river projects? · How are hydro projects being financed? · How does the regulatory landscape for hydro projects differ between provinces? Session 8: SOLAR ENERGY An overview of current and planned solar projects in Canada and an analysis of the role of solar in future renewable energy deployment. · Overcoming solar capacity issues · Cross border investment in solar projects · Who is successfully developing solar projects in Canada? · How are solar projects being financed? · Residential or commercial solar projects? Session 9: EMERGING RENEWABLE ENERGY MARKETS A look at the geothermal, biomass and waste energy markets in Canada, and how the financing of these projects is proceeding. Geothermal Power Projects · How are geothermal projects being financed? · What potential is there for geothermal development in Canada? · Financing within Canada but operating assets in the USA · Conventional geothermal vs. enhanced geothermal, and the potential for meeting energy needs through geothermal projects Biomass Projects · Domestic biomass projects update · How are biomass projects being financed? · Which are the most attractive provinces for biomass investment and production? Session 10: THE ROLE OF FIRST NATIONS This session will feature a panel discussion, looking at the involvement of First Nations in renewable energy projects in Canada. Key issues to be discussed include: · How is the role of First Nations in renewable energy projects changing? · Aligning the mindset of project developers, financiers and the First Nations · How can industry work better with First Nations? Session 11: VENTURE CAPITAL This session will feature a panel of leading venture capitalists. Key issues for discussion include: · What are the typical investment criteria for the VC community? · How is the role of VC in renewable energy projects changing? · What involvement can we expect from overseas venture capital? |
