Introduction |
As China makes its presence felt in the solar photovoltaic market, information about the producers in each link of the supply chain is now essential for companies around the world who are involved in or are interested in the photovoltaic business. With so many producers big and small in the Chinese market, there are many business opportunities for companies looking to purchase ingots or wafers, to sell materials or manufacturing equipment to ingot and wafer manufacturers, and for companies looking to invest in the business. However, the sheer amount of information (and misinformation) in both printed and electronic media makes it hard work for those responsible to obtain accurate, reliable and relevant information on the market.
ENF has gathered information from the source through telephone contacts with all the manufacturers of ingots and wafers in the Chinese market (and in some cases also visited the factories), to bring you the latest numbers on the market. As well as direct information collection, ENF also collected information from equipment manufacturers and from a friendly 3rd party company who had conducted interviews with key players. ENF was then able to adjust the data given by some manufacturers to ensure misinformation was filtered out from the report.
The full details of the report with example pages can be found below.
|
Market Survey Methodology |
- ENF collected company data through telephone interviews with each manufacturer (including follow-up
faxes or emails when requested). For most companies, ingot or wafer vice president, general manager,
production manager, sales manager, purchasing manager, technical engineer, financial reports centre,
press office etc. were interviewed.
- ENF collected 8 companies’ data through face-to-face visits, 7 of which produce both ingots and wafers,
and 1 produces wafers only.
- After collection of the data, each company was sent the details to check that all their details were correctly
recorded.
- Data was cross referenced with Chinese equipment manufacturers, principally to find ‘hard to spot’
companies in the market, but also to check accuracy of some results.
- Data was compared with information from other sources, including results given to ENF by a famous
Chinese manufacturer who interviewed the key ingot and wafer manufacturers themselves
- For those companies that gave partial information, estimates have been made for the missing information
based on information given by 3rd parties, logical conclusions (such as estimations of capacity from
knowing the brand of equipment used and number of equipment pieces) and market trends from other
Chinese survey participants (e.g. average industry factory utilisation, growth rates of the rest of the market etc.).
- By promising to keep individual company prices secret, ENF has successfully collected pricing data
from many companies to show price trends from 2004 to 2008.
- ENF also strove to keep information as up to date as possible by looking out for news about the
manufacturers and incorporating new numbers into the report even after data collection has ended.

Coverage |
The survey coverage is 58 ingot manufacturers, 9 of which are subsidiaries (subsidiary data is also shown as a total in the parent company), and 38 wafer manufacturers, 3 of which are subsidiaries. It includes all facilities that are directly controlled by that company, and excludes OEM purchased production (e.g. using another company to make ingots/wafers with your brand).
The report covers full data collected from 42 Chinese ingot manufacturers (and partial details collected from 16 other Chinese ingot manufacturers) and full details from 25 Chinese wafer manufacturers (and partial details from 13 other Chinese wafer manufacturers). |
